According to the Duden dictionary, which defines sport as “physical activity practiced according to certain rules [in competition] for the enjoyment of movement and play, for physical exercise”, disc golf is a sport.

Disc golf is a precision sport that is played outdoors and the aim is to complete a course of usually 18 holes with as few throws as possible. The player throws the disc from a set launch zone towards a metal catch basket (also known as a pole hole). The player marks the spot where the disc has landed and continues from there. The course is completed when the disc has sunk into the catch basket.

Performance is measured by the number of throws the disc golfer needs to complete the entire course within the rules. To be able to play disc golf successfully at a decent level and compete with other athletes, the disc golfer must have stamina, technique, concentration and precision.

Biomechanical aspects

Disc golf is a throwing sport in which body rotation and speed are the key elements. The flight distance of the disc increases with the speed at which the disc is thrown. The coordination of all elements (run-up on the tee, step sequence, hip rotation, stabilization of the torso and guidance of the throwing arm) is essential for an optimal and dynamic throw. The physical condition and improvement of the technique are then also means to be able to increase the level of play.

Physical fitness

Throwing the discs requires the use of different muscle groups, including the arms, shoulders, hips and legs. It is a full body workout that builds strength and coordination. The physical abilities of a disc golfer are not necessarily different from those of other athletes. On the other hand, a deficit in this area can prove to be a real disadvantage.

But it is not so much the physical aspect that distinguishes disc golf from other sports. Above all, along with ball golf, it is the most individual sport there is: Disc golf is not a competition against others, but first and foremost a battle against oneself.

Mental Fitness

Overall, mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. Mental strength helps to maintain motivation and focus on the game. A focused mind is crucial for accurate throws and strategic decisions on the course.

Healthy self-confidence is important. It influences throwing technique and decisions on the course. Positive self-talk and visualization can boost self-confidence.
