The “Golf Meggen Trophy” tournament kicks off the event. This tournament is special, as it is the first Swisstour tournament on a ball golf course. The Club Disc Golf Lucerne makes it possible. We spoke to Dave (Tournament Director).
Dave, Discgolf Luzern is organizing the first Swisstour tournament of the year this year, and on a golf course to boot. How did it come about?
We had been thinking about holding a tournament in the Lucerne area for a long time. We had a few ideas and one of them was a tournament on a golf course. We then took a walk around the golf course and were impressed by the terrain, the view and the possibilities for a disc golf course. For these reasons, we simply contacted the golf course by e-mail and were met with an open ear.
On March 8, 2023, we had the first meeting with the owners of the golf course and they were very positive about disc golf and interested in working with us. The cooperation with the golf course is very pleasant and courteous. We get a lot of help and openness from the owners of the golf course and they accommodate us with our ideas and plans.
In terms of the course layout, we had a lot of leeway with the areas around the golf course. After walking, playing, changing and discussing the course several times, a tournament layout emerged. More on this later.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Meggen and thank you in advance for the hospitality of the golf course.
Technical course, what awaits the players?
As we were able to plan our courses around the golf course, it will not be a course as you might know it from the DGPT, because we are not playing on the golf fairways. We play on the side areas of the golf course around the fairways. The holes are characterized by height differences, slopes of the fairways/greens, rather long distances and a few old fruit trees. The golf course is on a hill and is therefore exposed to the wind. When the wind comes up, it certainly plays a big factor.
It has nothing to do with the course, but the view and the panorama in good weather is beautiful and we hope that you can play the course in good weather.
Which hole are you particularly proud of?
I have already taken several courses to my heart, but course 1 with the classic golf course feel of Hazard Sandbunker and OB Golfgreen, as well as the two courses with the ponds (course 2 and course 14), I find the most beautiful.
Will there be any more tournaments on the Meggen golf course in the future? Perhaps a permanent installation? Are there any plans yet??
First of all, let’s see how our first tournament goes. We would very much like to continue our cooperation and will see how things go in the future with the golf course owner after the tournament. If there is interest, nothing would stand in the way of further cooperation.
Our course layout is mainly laid out on agricultural land, which is not playable in spring, summer and fall. Therefore, a permanent installation will probably not be possible.
At the moment, the preparations require our full capacity, so we do not yet have any concrete plans for the future, except that we would like to continue the collaboration.
We wish all participants lots of fun at the tournament and Dave’s team every success!
